The Acoustic Engineer’s Wavelength: On the Signal and the Static of a Sentence
I once spent an afternoon with an acoustic engineer, a person whose job it is to design rooms where every whispered word can be heard clearly at the back. Our conversation drifted, as mine tend to, toward writing. He didn’t talk about plot or character. Instead, he described a concept called the signal-to-noise ratio. The principle is simple: in any transmission, you have the desired signal and you have the background noise. The goal is to maximize one and minimize the other. If the noise—the hum of the HVAC, the rustle of a bag, the echo from a bad wall—is too high, the signal is lost, and the listener gives up.
It struck me that this is the fundamental, unspoken struggle of every sentence we write. The signal is the clear, pure idea we intend to convey. The noise is everything else: the convoluted syntax, the pretentious vocabulary, the hedging clauses, the metaphors that clash, the sheer fatigue of extra syllables. Readers, like listeners in a poorly designed hall, have a remarkably low tolerance for auditory clutter. Their attention is the precious, fragile signal they are trying to receive. We, as writers, are too often the source of the static.
Finding the Right Frequency
The engineer explained that different materials absorb different frequencies. A carpet damens the high-end hiss; heavy curtains swallow mid-range muddle. In writing, the “materials” are our choices. A concrete noun absorbs the fuzzy vibration of abstraction. An active verb dampens the droning echo of the passive voice. Punctuation acts as precise baffling, controlling the reverberation of a thought. Each choice either clarifies the signal or adds to the noise floor.
This is why editing feels so physical, so much like tuning an instrument or adjusting a microphone. We are not just “making it better.” We are walking into the resonant chamber of our own prose and listening. We hear the squeal of an adverb that feeds back on itself. We detect the low rumble of a paragraph that goes on too long, vibrating at a frequency that induces drowsiness. We identify the sharp, painful ping of a rhetorical question used as a crutch.
The most profound lesson, however, was about silence. In acoustic design, silence isn’t the absence of sound; it’s the controlled environment that makes sound possible. It’s the space between the notes. In our work, this is the white space on the page, the paragraph break, the full stop. It’s the art of knowing what not to say, of trusting the signal to carry across the quiet. A sentence crammed with every possible supporting detail, every clever aside, is a room with too many reflective surfaces—it becomes a cacophony of our own cleverness.
So now, in the final passes, I ask an engineer’s question of my words: What is the core signal here? And what is the noise? I strip away the decorative paneling of extra adjectives. I tighten the joints between clauses to prevent creaks. I test the piece by reading it aloud, listening for the places where my own voice falters or strains, where the meaning gets lost in the architectural flaws of the sentence. The goal is no longer merely to be understood, but to be received—cleanly, powerfully, and without interference—on the exact frequency where a reader is tuned to listen.
